Happily Hungary (Ten days of March dayI)

Mary Akinwale is a creative writer, with a high sense of Intuition for a good story. Currently residing in the western part of Nigeria where she has put to paper over time words that draw attention to the things we sometimes never talk about.

In the darkest of the rooms, like logs we would sleep
The crowing of the cock and the bleating of the old mother goat would wake us from our slumber
And then we would  remember
last night we never even ate supper
sleeping like an angry lion not finding it's prey

When you hear the sound kookoorookoo
from the mouth of the cock behind the house
you will know again, it's another sight
a new day had come, the night no more in sight

We would wash our faces say goodbye not even knowing our fate and today our races
Then we would work with little or no time to lie
like slaves working for the high
Thinking about everything and heaving a sigh
For surely we know on the table a meal must be placed

The sun will scorch us and still smile on us remaining our brother
The rain will beat us, leaving us dripping
and still mother our works

Then here comes the mud, who knows nothing than to get us dirty
When we have been there ten thousand years
Rejoicing in scarcity and still happily hungry
Waiting for a miracle and a time to reverse the old story

Still in our struggles and sufferings, can't afford a penny for offering
Huzzling, pretending to be happy, waiting for an angel so long, before we tarry

Then the night will come quietly as if unnoticed
Time to call and remember how the labour of our hands had put a meal on our tables
Or if the day had added to our troubles

We go out, see and hear different things
The days passing by like flipping through the read pages of a book
We are alone, no one knows when we will be free
Even for once have we had a good scene

Even in our eyes, we watched them being killed
Dragged out and slaughtered like a kid
We have nothing and yet they come to take our money and goods
Ask him he will say "I'm not feeling good".

We are hungry and starving yet we do well to be happy
Happy in our hunger
Should I then say we are hungrily happy or happily hungry?
It's only what today says that will tell.
