Seemingly strange, I got talking to a couple of people some days ago
and I discovered something.
A lot has truly changed since the last promised change
by our dear country’s political fore runners,
and yet a whole lot of
the CHANGE-ing effects cutting deep into our pockets,
our pride, even our hearts.
I began to compare the prices of stuffs,
the before and the now, like;
Cardboard paper- ₦20 now ₦60
Pencil- ₦10 now ₦20
7up soft drink- ₦50 now ₦80
Handkerchief-₦50 now ₦80…
A bottle of palm oil-₦250 now₦700
These findings made me realize also that
this CHANGE has cut even deeper into perspective,
stolen more than dreams,
and swallowed more than many futures.
Now perspective has changed into dreams
and dreams now live in the swallowed futures.
Now school fees have miscellaneous attached.
They used to call it stealing, but now they call it CHANGE.
A lot of us called the common act corruption,
But now it holds a common name with those we used to call thieves.
The society once taught us that the factors of production
were affected by a lot, with transportation
and proximity to raw materials inclusive,
The society also emphasized on distribution,
But today, the only factor affecting production is CHANGE.
Our politicians are no longer corrupt, they are CHANGED
Our men of god are no longer politicians, they are CHANGED
Robbers are not wicked, they are CHANGED
Educationists are not so deceitful, they are CHANGED
Perspective, ideas, dreams, hopes, market women,
school children, youths, wives, families and
salaries are not forgotten, they are CHANGED
On a rarely spoken truth,
The man from the store tells the market woman
that the least cost of goods is #200 per stock,
yet you go to the common market,
to the same market woman who in the dirt of her stand
after the killing transport and the factor called CHANGE,
to price the same stock at #80.
In this state only to keep her in the daze of;
“I either sell at a worthless price or
Let em goods all rot”
… and CHANGE is now the new name for wickedness
They change the name, but it is all still the same.
Thieves, cheats, liars were once categorized as corrupt,
Today corrupt is called CHANGE!
You catch a person stealing, ask them their reason for stealing,
they say “Oga na CHANGE”
Just recently a joke was made that
spiritualists now request for two heads rather than one
with reference to the spiritual constitutional clause;
“In a case of recession, any type would do,
No specifications on virgins or age brackets”
Because the gods now understand the CHANGE.
We will grow, grow beyond this CHANGE,…
But the only irony remains that,
what we desperately need now is another CHANGE.
Not another promise of #5,000 to undergraduates,
Provision of 2000 jobs or
The promise of $1=₦1.
But a change from within.
That CHANGE that makes you know that
you need no convincing.
